Alphatron Marine’s own entertainment system will become the new standard for three new offshore survey coastal vessels of Fugro Africa, Fugro Middle-East and Fugro Europe. The Alphatainment system offers Fugro the possibility to respond to specific requirements both now and in the future: such as viewing bridge information or underwater pictures via the TV screens throughout the ship.
Fugro seeks out the frontiers of what is possible with an entertainment system. Gerard van den Baard, manager IT & AV Systems at Alphatron Marine: ‘To find out whether bridge information can be shown via the entertainment system without loss of picture quality, we performed a test whereby the radar on the roof of our headquarters in Rotterdam was connected to the Alphatainment system in our showroom. This enabled Fugro to see with its own eyes how perfectly well this link retained the original picture quality. Since Fugro knows that the Alphatainment system fits their specific requirements, it has opted to make this solution its new standard.’ Soon the first ship will be equipped with this modular concept in 29 cabins and at public locations on the ship.
Safety and remote serviceability
The Alphatainment system offers more than nice high-definition television pictures. It can also be used as part of the on-board safety process. When there is an emergency announcement via an interface to the public broadcast system, the entertainment is frozen. The system can also be set up to allow use of the entertainment only after the video containing safety information has been shown on the information channel. A satellite communication link enables remote service support of the system and has less cable and hardware throughout the ship compared to analogue solutions, which shortens the installation time and makes servicing easier.
Unique modular system
Van den Baard: ‘Alphatron has developed its own Alphatainment system because this modular solution enables the customer to choose what he needs when he needs it. We don’t supply just an entertainment system. We also use our broad knowledge of communication, observation and navigation to look at how the product can help optimise the processes on board. Because we can supply complete solutions, our customer has fewer subcontractors to deal with. And if there is something wrong, the customer is just one telephone call away from a solution.’
